Another turn on the hamster wheel

Wasting a beautiful Maine summer day waiting for your flight in a crappy Fuddrucker's in George H.W. Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston has a way of focusing your mind on the real cost/benefit ratio produced by your professional pursuits.

Room to breathe

I gripe a lot about my required biz travel, particularly when it deprives of one of the precious few summer weekends we have in Maine. But truth be told, I think the occasional biz trip is very healthy for family life.

Much as I love my tribe, I'm a solitary cat by nature and the time on the road allows me to indulge that side of my personality, and thus not be quite as much of an asshole when the family circus comes to town. Likewise, since I'm the de-facto family disciplinarian, it provides my two teenagers a bit more of the freedom they crave and need. And finally, the promise of some separation inevitably causes my bride and I to carve out some alone time before I leave and when I come back, time that reminds us that before there was a family, there was a couple, and there will be again soon.

Absence truly does make the heart grow fonder. As always, feedback & conversation welcome. Ciao!

Cool swim in the pool and relax on my patio in the shade of the pergola. The Reverend Al Green preaching the gospel on the Bose... I want a drink.

Independence Day?

It's been roughly six months six I started this journey, and I have to confess that I'm no more certain now than I was then that it's possible to declare independence from the tyranny of one's own weaknesses, shortcomings and bad habits. But I'm more certain than ever that it's a fight worth fighting.
